Windows 8 Sells in Excess of 40 Million Copies in the First Month

Microsoft has been crunching the numbers following last month’s release of Windows 8, and there’s really no way to put this but to say that they’re looking pretty good so far. The Redmond company sold over 40 million licenses of Windows 8, with some 4 million units shipping in the first weekend after the October 26th launch.

“The journey is just beginning, but I am pleased to announce today that we have sold 40 million Windows 8 licenses so far.” Tami Reller shared the news with analysts attending the Credit Suisse 2012 Annual Technology Conference.

2 things are really bothering me:

1. Sold to whom? Because Microsoft also, sometime counts license sales to channel partners, as well, sales. Which doesn’t necessarily mean that the copies were actually purchased by customers.

2. No data on the Surface’s success or lack thereof was shared with analysts. Since Microsoft is trumpeting 40 million sold licenses of Windows 8 while keeping suspiciously quiet on Surface’s market performance, it’s pretty safe to infer that the company’s tablet is doing less than stellar.

Personally, I’m going to wait a little while, and see what Internet metrics firms have to say about Windows 8 usage worldwide, before I make up my mind about Windows 8’s success.
