Here are some details about Windows 8 from the team building System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM). Now, just to be clear, SCVMM 2012 (the fourth release of VMM) is slated for release by the end of 2011.

When the team is talking the fifth release VMM they’re either talking about SCVMM 2012 R2 or SCVMM 2013.

System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM) is Microsoft’s primary product offering in the datacenter management space. SCVMM provides features that allow a user to provision virtualization hosts & clusters from bare metal, integrate them with requisite storage and networking resources, and manufacture compute clouds for IT users. On top of this, SCVMM provides complete virtual machine and multi-tier application lifecycle management across multiple hypervisor platforms (HyperV, VMWare, Xen).

In the last 5 years, from scratch, the SCVMM team has shipped 3 releases (v1, v2, v2r2), and we have a fourth release (v3) slated for release later this year. We are currently working on plans for our fifth release that coincides with the next release of the Windows HyperV platform. SCVMM started with a small dev team (18 developers) and we have doubled in size over the last 2 years. We are a team that values its startup culture where people are often required to wear multiple hats and help meet our collective goals. We encourage developers to take risks and stretch themselves. Being in fast developing area requires us to educate ourselves continuously and remain agile to stay on the cutting edge. It also implies many opportunities for growth. We are battling a strong competitor in VMWare which makes our lives extremely interesting.

We are now growing our team to meet the demands of our Windows 8 release. Window 8 has specifically targeted the deployment of virtualization at hosters as one of its pillars. Towards this, they have made key investments in the networking, storage, Hyper-V, clustering, multi-tenancy, and management areas. SCVMM is chartered with the responsibility of making these features manageable at scale. In addition, we are currently investigating the tooling and monitoring required to enable hosters to manage the entire lifecycle of their tenants.
