HTML5 and JavaScript Apps for Office 15 as Well as for Windows 8

Remember the June preview of Windows 8? Thought as much! And you might also recall a little something about HTML5 and Javascript applications supported naively on Windows 8. If you’re a ASP.NET or Silverlight developer, then that’s all you remember. :)

Well, here’s more good news for web developers that have mastered web standards: JavaScript and HTML5 apps will also work on the Office 15 platform, as well as on Windows 8.

The next version of Visual Studio will apparently have a role to play in all this, but since we’re talking about HTML5 and JS, I don’t think that other IDEs can be ruled out.

HTML5 and JavaScript apps for Office 15 won’t be limited to just Office 15. Instead, they’ll work on all clients and servers, on SharePoint, and even integrate with Office 365.

Software Development Engineer II

Job Category: Software Engineering: Development
Location: United States, WA, Redmond
Job ID: 757221
Product: Visual Studio
Division: Server & Tools Business

Want to push the limits in ease of use? Want to be at the epicenter of Microsoft’s application programmability strategy? Have you always wanted to help design a tool used by millions of developers? In 1993, Microsoft integrated the Visual Basic developer experience into our Office application suite – effectively turning one of our most profitable software packages into a platform upon which other business solutions could be built. Bill Gates has heralded that move as one of the key elements to the success of Office.

Now is the time to take Office programmability to the next level. We’re a small but strong team within Visual Studio that is currently in the planning stages for Office 15 programmability tools. One of our key goals is to enable professional developers to contribute to the Office platform by making development for Office as easy and fun as building applications for the next version of Windows! Integration of JavaScript/HTML5 will enable developers to create rich applications that span clients and server, integrate with Office 365, enhance the SharePoint experience, and unlock new scenarios that unleash the great potential that lies in the combination of Office and the cloud.

To deliver on the new programmability vision, we’re looking for strong problem solvers to design, develop, and deliver the next generation of Office development tools. As a Software Design Engineer on the Visual Studio for Business Applications team, you will collaborate with our program management team to help define the product vision, apply internal and external customer feedback to our product, and drive critical features to success. You should have experience shipping complex products and rock-solid design and development skills (modern C++, C#, debugging of unfamiliar code). Experience with scripting technologies is highly desirable.
